Probably no accommodation in the Shetland Islands can boast a
location quite as spectacular as Eshaness Lighthouse. Nestled in the heart of
some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in Britain the lighthouse offer
unrivalled views in almost every direction.
The district of Eshaness is one of the stars attractions for visitors to
Shetland and locals alike and offers the very best of Shetland scenery. On your
way North to the lighthouse you will see the Drongs a formidable set of
precipitous stacks, and the Dore Holm with its incredible rock arch.
Within easy walking distance of the lighthouse are The Holes of Scraada which
were formed when the roof caved in at the end of a long and narrow sea cave
stretching more than 100 metres in from the coast and a little further on is The
Grind o' Da Navir a huge vertical sided gateway in the cliffs where the sea has
ripped an enormous chunk of rock out of the cliff face and hurled it inland.
Also nearby is the Loch of Houlland with the remains of an Iron Age broch, the
Tangwick Haa Museum, a 17th century lairds' house which now houses a fascinating
collection of local artefacts and the fishing station of Steness once a centre
for the "far Haaf" open boat fishing which took place some 60km offshore.
The building represents ideal family accommodation with two double and one bunk
bedded room, a lounge, a bathroom, a toilet and a fully equipped kitchen
including a washing machine. The property is centrally heated and car parking is
available.
Eshaness is the "get away from it all" lighthouse situated as it is some 64km or
1hours drive away from the bright lights of Lerwick. There is a small shop
however only 9km away at the village of Hillswick which also houses a vegetarian
café and a seal sanctuary at The Booth.
Larger shops are available in the
villages of Brae and Ollaberry and there is also an indoor swimming pool at Brae
about 27km away. A new café has recently been built in the Eshaness area and
will offer a selection of meals including lunches and dinners for appetites
sharpened by the fresh Shetland air.
