Situated on a rocky headland at the South Mouth of Lerwick Harbour, passing
the "Bressa light" is the acknowledged start and finish line for any journey to
and from the Shetland Islands by ferry. Since its construction in 1858 by the
famous Stevenson family Bressay Lighthouse has not only provided a timely
warning for mariners seeking shelter in rough weather but also a distinctive and
much loved landmark for both locals and visitors arriving at the port.
Situated on the beautiful island of Bressay the lighthouse combines
spectacular views over Lerwick Harbour with the temptations of the island
itself. Bressay is steeped in both archaeology and history and combines its own
wildlife with the National Nature Reserve on the island of Noss, which "houses"
over 100,000 pairs of breeding seabirds.
Accommodation is provided in two keepers cottages and both buildings
represent ideal family accommodation with two double rooms, a room with bunk
beds, bathroom, toilet, a fully equipped kitchen, laundry room and lounge. The
property is centrally heated and car parking is available.
The lighthouse is only a short ferry ride from the main Northlink ferry
terminal and conveniently located for visits to the main town of Lerwick with
its museum, leisure centre, restaurants, bars and shopping facilities. The 5min
ferry ride runs hourly from 7.00am to 10.30pm.
If the bright lights of Lerwick
don't offer any temptation then the island also has its own shop, post office,
Heritage Centre and a friendly atmosphere for a quiet drink or a superb meal can
be found at the Maryfield House Hotel.
